The Great Gatsby Layered Learning Portfolio

Throughout this unit you will have the freedom during class to work on any of the various assignments listed in the portfolio. You are not required to complete all of the assignments, however you must earn the minimum amount of points for each layer in order to receive credit for the higher layers. Credit is earned for learning, which comes about through listening, discussing, reading and doing. Any and all work completed during this unit must be submitted by the due date in a well-organized portfolio. Your portfolio will always be organized as listed below; each assignment must be clearly titled. Students are responsible for keeping their own work over the course of the unit.

  1. Layer 3 Assignment = 200

    Total = 700

Layer 1 - Foundational Activities (200 Points minimum)

Choose and complete any combination of the following 6 assignments, you must earn a minimum of 200 points in layer 1 in order to receive any credit for layers 2 & 3.

  1. Timeline - 20
  2. Vocabulary - 15 (01pt per word memorized)
  3. Pull Quotes - 25 (05pt per quote analyzed)
  4. Quiz Questions - 70 (01pt per question)
  5. Lecture Notes - 30 (10pt per page)
  6. Annotations - 100 (10pt per page)

Layer 2 - Creative Exploration (300 Points minimum)

Chose and complete any combination of the following 7 assignments, you must earn a minimum of 220 points in layer 2 in order to receive any credit for layer 3.

  1. Lit. Circles - 90 (30pt per week)
  2. Annotated Bibliography - 75 (25pt per annotated source)
  3. Rhetorical Précis - 70
  4. C. & C. Adaptation - 25
  5. Reenactment - 25
  6. Art Project - 25
  7. Chapter Activities - 90 (10pt per chapter)

Layer 3 - Application of Learning (200 Points)

Choose and complete ONE of the following assignments. You may only earn credit for layer 3 if you have earned an appropriate amount of points in layers 1 & 2.

  1. 5 Paragraph Essay 200
  2. Presentation 200

Layer 1 - Foundational Activities 


  1. Timeline: Make a detailed timeline of all major plot points of the literary work, including page numbers for when each plot point occurs. 
  2. Vocabulary: Define and memorize the definition of the 15 vocabulary words pulled directly from The Great Gatsby. You must not only know the definition, but how to use the word in a compound sentence. Your vocabulary list should include the word, the definition, and the sentence the word was originally found in. 
  3. Pull Quotes: Find up to five quotes from The Great Gatsby that demonstrate the deliberate use of literature devices and contribute significantly to the author’s purpose. Include the page number, and be prepared to articulate what literature device is being used and how it contributes to author’s purpose. 
  4. Quiz: There are three content quizzes totaling 70 questions, you can take one or all of these quizzes either orally or written but you must give me at least 1 days notice if you choose to take the quiz on paper. 
  5. Lecture Notes: Watch the following videos about The Great Gatsby. Take detailed notes on each video (up to one page per video) and be prepared to answer basic questions about the content. http://bit.ly/fitzgerald-documentary, bit.ly/gatsbycc-pt1, and bit.ly/gatsbycc-pt2
  6. Annotations: Take detailed notes as you read through The Great Gatsby. Identify lit devices, key quotes, important shifts in mood/setting/character, define unknown words, and track your own thoughts and questions about the story.

Layer 2 - Creative Exploration


  1. Lit Circles: There will be three literature circles for this portfolio. Each person in the group must come up with five discussion questions for the assigned reading from that week. Additionally you must choose one of the lit circle roles to complete each week.
  2. Annotated Bibliography: Find up to three academic and peer-reviewed sources that shed an interesting light on the literary work. Create a Works Cited page with properly formatted citations for each source and write a brief annotation summarizing each source, identifying its relevance, and qualifying the credentials of the author(s). 
  3. Rhetorical Précis: A rhetorical précis is a highly specialized, specific type of summary. Refer to the Rhetorical Précis handout for specific instructions on how to write your Rhetorical Précis.
  4. Compare & Contrast Adaptation of Literary work: Watch or read an adaptation of the literary work (this could be a movie, play, graphic novel, etc.) and in a brief compare and contrast essay (500 words) discuss how the adaptation strays from the original work, and what the impact of these differences are on the overarching themes of the work. 
  5. Write a Song: Write and record (or preform) a song about the literary work. This assignment will be graded on creativity, originality, and insightfulness. 
  6. Art Project: Create an original work of art inspired by the literary work. This assignment will be graded on creativity, originality, and insightfulness.
  7. Chapter Activities: The Chapter Activities handout has specific activities designed for each of the 9 chapters of the book. Each chapter activity is worth 10 points.

Layer 3 - Application of Learning (500 Points)


  1. Essay: Write a well-organized essay demonstrating your unique insight into the author’s purpose and cultural impact of the literary work as well as the craft and technique used to accomplish this. Your essay must be a minimum of 5 paragraphs, typed, in MLA format.
  2. Presentation: Create a well-organized presentation demonstrating your unique insight into the author’s purpose and cultural impact of the literary work as well as the craft and technique used to accomplish this. Your presentation must be a minimum of 5 minutes.
