Things Fall Apart Layered Portfolio

Throughout this unit you will have the freedom during class to work on any of the various assignments listed in the portfolio. You are not required to complete all of the assignments, however you must earn the minimum amount of points for each layer in order to receive credit for the higher layers. Credit is earned for learning, which comes about through listening, discussing, reading and doing. Any and all work completed during this unit must be submitted by the due date in a well-organized portfolio. Your portfolio will always be organized as listed below; each assignment must be clearly titled. Students are responsible for keeping their own work over the course of the unit.
  1. Layer 3 Assignment = 200
  2. Layer 2 Assignments = 200
  3. Layer 1 Assignments = 200
    Total = 600

Layer 1 - Foundational Activities (200 Points minimum)

Choose and complete any combination of the following 5 assignments, you must earn a minimum of 200 points in layer 1 in order to receive any credit for layers 2 and 3.
  1. Timeline - 225 (05pr per chapter outlined)
  2. Quiz's - 50 (01pt per question answered correctly)
  3. Reading Guide - 70 (01pt per question)
  4. Lecture Notes - 30 (10pt per page)
  5. Annotations - 100 (10pt per page)

Layer 2 - Creative Exploration (200 Points minimum)

Chose and complete any combination of the following 7 assignments, you must earn a minimum of 220 points in layer 2 in order to receive any credit for layer 3.
  1. Annotated Bibliography - 50 (10pt per annotated source)
  2. Dialectical Journal - 50 (10pt per quote analyzed)
  3. Literary Connections - 50 (10pt per source analyzed) 
  4. Rhetorical Précis - 50
  5. Write a Song/Poem - 25
  6. Art Project - 25
  7. Reenactment - 25

Layer 3 - Application of Learning (200 Points)

Choose and complete ONE of the following assignments. You may only earn credit for layer 3 if you have earned an appropriate amount of points in layers 1 and 2.
  1. 5 Paragraph Essay 200
  2. Presentation 200

Layer 1 - Foundational Activities 

  1. Timeline: Make a detailed timeline of all major plot points of the literary work, including page numbers for when each plot point occurs. 
  2. Reading Guide: Attached to this packet is a reading guide containing 70 short answer questions. These questions must be answered in complete sentences.
  3. Quiz: There are three content quizzes totaling 50 questions, these will be administered on specific dates and cannot be made up if missed. 
  4. Lecture Notes: Watch the following videos about Things Fall Apart and take detailed notes on each video. Be prepared to answer basic questions about the content. http://bit.ly/tfa-lectures 
  5. Annotations: Take detailed notes as you read through Things Fall Apart. Identify lit devices, key quotes, and important shifts in mood/setting/character, define unknown words, and track your own thoughts and questions about the story. Annotations consisting exclusively of plot summary are worth nothing. Annotations without page numbers are worth nothing. 

Layer 2 - Creative Exploration

  1. Annotated Bibliography: Find up to five academic and peer-reviewed sources that shed an interesting light on the literary work. Create a Works Cited page with properly formatted citations for each source and write a brief annotation summarizing each source, identifying its relevance, and qualifying the credentials of the author(s). 
  2. Dialectical Journal: Find up to five quotes from Things Fall Apart that demonstrate the deliberate use of literature devices and contribute significantly to the author’s purpose. Include the page number, and be prepared to articulate what literature device is being used and how it contributes to author’s purpose. 
  3. Literary Connections: In the back of your book there are eight different pieces of literature ranging from bible passages and poems to short stories. Choose up to five of these works and write a one-page analysis of how that piece of literature can be related to Things Fall Apart. 
  4. Rhetorical Précis: A rhetorical précis is a highly specialized, specific type of summary. Refer to the Rhetorical Précis handout for specific instructions on how to write your Rhetorical Précis.
  5. Write a Song/Poem: Write and record (or preform) a song or poem about the literary work. This assignment will be graded on creativity, originality, and insightfulness. 
  6. Art Project: Create an original work of art inspired by the literary work. This assignment will be graded on creativity, originality, and insightfulness.
  7. Reenactment: Choose a specific scene from the book and stage a performance of that scene. You can collaborate with other students for this assignment, but each student will be graded individually on their effort and contribution. Scene must be cleared with me in advance, and must be preformed for the class. 

Layer 3 - Application of Learning (500 Points)

  1. Essay: Write a well-organized essay demonstrating your unique insight into the author’s purpose and cultural impact of the literary work as well as the craft and technique used to accomplish this. Your essay must be a minimum of 5 paragraphs, typed, in MLA format.
  2. Presentation: Create a well-organized presentation demonstrating your unique insight into the author’s purpose and cultural impact of the literary work as well as the craft and technique used to accomplish this. Your presentation must be a minimum of 5 minutes.
